Skin Conditions

Skin Infections – a common skin infection is Athlete’s Foot. This is a fungal infection that afflicts the skin. Typical symptoms include: moderate to severe itching, redness, skin blisters and peeling. This can be successfully treated with a topical medication. Other common skin diseases of the foot include: psoriasis, anidrosis (dry, cracked skin), eczema and dermatitis, all of which can be helped with appropriate care.

Cracked dry skin around heels and toes is treated successfully with gentle skin debridement and specialised prescribed skin conditioners.

Athlete’s Foot is a fungal skin infection caused by Trichophyton or Epidermophyton and causes itchy, red, cracked or scaly skin.  Skin between the toes is usually affected with itchy skin/ blisters.  This condition,  also called tinea pedis, is very contagious, and is often picked up in showers, locker rooms, swimming pools and other public areas.

Shoes create a humid, dark and warm environment which allows the fungus to grow.  The fungus can spread from the feet to other parts of the body by contaminated bed sheets or clothing.

Heel Pain and Arch Pain can be caused by several soft tissue inflammatory conditions including Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, and Achilles Tendonitis. These painful conditions are treatable with specific, prescribed, and targeted physical therapies; instruction and self-care education; condition specific exercises; footwear technical advice and prescription orthotics for certain cases.

Non-invasive physical therapies include ExtraCorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (see  Specialized Services )and Ultra Sound treatments. Generally the longer the condition remains untreated the more challenging it is to treat.

Toenail Conditions

Nail Fungal Disease and Medical Laser

Fungal Nail Disease is caused by fungal infection of the nail bed. This causes discoloration (turns nail yellow, orange, brown ,white, green or black) and causes the nail to disintegrate and break up. Thick, Discolored Toe Nails
These may be caused by injury to the nail matrix by shoe pressure, fungus, toe misalignment, foot hypermobility, trauma or hereditary factors. Certain styles of footwear can cause repeated damage to the growth plate at the base of the nail.  Usually, treatment is painless with therapeutic buffing, clipping and topical medication. MEDICAL LASER THERAPY may be indicated as an option.

Toe and Joint Deformities
Bunions, Tailors Bunion Hammer Toes, Claw Toes, Trigger Toes are deformities of toe joints which often result in pain, pressure calluses and corns or blisters, discomfort, pain and difficulty fitting into regular footwear. Causes vary from arthritis, heredity factors, influence of footwear, underlying systemic or neuromuscular disease (e.g. Diabetic Neuropathy, Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, Multiple Sclerosis).

Toe deformities can be addressed through prescribed devices for toes or joints and small effective devices or discrete joint bracing (worn in the shoe )for the affected toes.

Toe exercises; footwear technical advice and footwear design modifications can be helpful. Prescription foot orthotics can help certain cases.
